CDC Monarch CL®
CDC Monarch (IBC-1306) is a very high-yielding, large red Clearfield® lentil variety. In 7 years of testing in the co-op and regional trials, it yielded 120% of the check variety CDC Maxim in the brown and dark brown soil zones and 119% in the black and dark grey zone (Table 1). It is the highest yielding red lentil available. Statistical analysis of 9 years of long-term Regional Variety Trial data ranked CDC Monarch first for yield over all zones among 9 historical and new small and large red lentil varieties (Figure 1). Seed coat colour, cotyledon colour, flowering time, maturity, and disease resistance characteristics are similar to CDC Maxim. CDC Monarch is taller than CDC Maxim, which is similar to other large red lentils. Seed thickness is greater compared to CDC KR-2 making it well suited for lentil dehulling (Table 2). Application for PBR’91 protection for CDC Monarch has been submitted.
